You are the system operator: own a stock of 5000-20000 silicone or steel containers certified for food contact (produced in Germany or China with EU certification), lease them to 30-100+ partner gastro venues in one city/district, run centralised QR app for deposit tracking and periodic container audits. Customer pays 2 โฌ โ 4 โฌ deposit at food purchase, returns container at any partner venue, deposit refunded via app immediately. Venue washes in commercial dishwasher and reuses (cycle 1-3 days).
EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) in recent years bans single-use plastic packaging in gastro above certain volume, and in coming years PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) will introduce mandatory reusable systems for take-away in all major EU cities. UK Environment Act 2021 implements Extended Producer Responsibility from 2025 charging producers for packaging waste, and Deposit Return Scheme by 2027 for beverage containers.
