Grocery and convenience franchises

Groceries are a high-turnover, thin-margin business. On fresh goods the margin runs to a few percent, so profit is decided by waste rather than by pricing. The bread thrown out at eight in the evening eats the margin from a whole shelf. Order without watching real sales data and you lose money in a busy shop.

The second thing no franchise presentation opens with: opening hours. The network will want early mornings, Sundays and public holidays, and staff for those shifts are hard to find. Most franchisees stand at the till themselves for the first year. If you want a business that runs without you being present, this is not it.

Frequently asked

?What margin do grocery franchises actually leave?

It varies sharply by category: ambient goods and drinks carry more, while bread, milk and sugar carry far less because shoppers compare those prices directly. Each profile states the range the franchisor declares and whether it sets your retail prices for you.

?How much does it cost to open a convenience store franchise?

Beyond the entry fee, budget for shop fit-out, refrigeration and the first full stocking, all of which you fund yourself. Stock and cooling equipment are usually the largest items. Each profile separates what the network supplies from what stays on your invoice.

?Is a convenience franchise worth it in a bigger city?

Footfall and the competition within a few minutes' walk decide it. In a city you pay higher rent but sell more, including at unusual hours. On a smaller housing estate rent is lower, yet evening takings often fail to cover extended opening hours.
